Fire Strikes

London Underground has announced the following stations will be closed during the fire strikes due to safety concerns.

  • Belsize Park
  • Borough
  • Caledonian Road
  • Chalk Farm
  • Covent Garden
  • Edgeware Road (Bakerloo only)
  • Elephant & Castle
  • Gloucester Road (Piccadilly only)
  • Goodge Street
  • Hampstead
  • Holland Park
  • Holloway Road
  • Kennington
  • Lambeth North
  • Lancaster Gate
  • Mornington Crescent
  • Queensway
  • Regent's Park
  • Russell Square
  • Shadwell
  • Tufnell Park
  • Wapping

These are amongst the deepest of the Tube stations and only have access via lift. Without full time fire cover they are considered too dangerous to keep open.

The RMT union has called for every Tube station to be shut during the strikes. A spokesperson for the union says, "If LU has safety concerns for all these stations that are closing, then they should all be closed".

The lack of fire cover raises concerns about safety of all stations, coming 15 years after the King's Cross disaster where 31 people died. LU insists that the stations that to remain open can be evacuated within 10 minutes of an alarm being raised.
