Two New Tram Systems For London

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingston, announced today (Wednesday 29th May 2002) that he has given the go-ahead for two new tram systems in London. Both the systems to be implemented followed public consultation which showed a very high level of support to the proposals.

The first system to be built will be the West London Tram Scheme. It is to be completed by 2009, cost £200 million to build, and carry 50 million passengers a year. It will run between Uxbirdge and Shepherds Bush via Action, Ealing, Hanwell and Southhall.

The second is the Cross River Tram Scheme. This will link Camden / Kings Cross to Peckham / Brixton and run via Euston and Waterloo. It is hoped this route will be completed by 2011 and will carry 72 million passengers a year.

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, said, "The West London and Cross River Trams will provide faster and more reliable public transport in these heavily congested areas of London. Each of these schemes will carry the same number of passengers as carried on the Docklands Light Railway."
